How To Update Your Google Business Listing

“Have you tried AOL-ing that business?” said no one in the past 25 years. Google owns the internet, and thus, we “google” things on the internet. Not many companies can use their business name as a proper noun and a verb. This is important to note because your business listing is most likely on Google – whether you put it there or not. However, you may not realize that Google allows you to have full control of the information that is out there for the public to see. Here’s how to claim and update your Google Business listing.

What is a Google Business Listing?

First, we need to understand why Google even created business listings in the first place. Google is a business that provides the most relevant, up to date information to its users based on search queries and keywords entered in the google.com search bar. A Google Business listing will appear when someone types in a search query that Google’s algorithm defines as the most relevant match. The listing can include a business address, hours, phone number, website, customer reviews, photos, updates, and more.

Claim Your Business Listing

Here’s the step-by-step:

  1. Go to www.google.com/business
  2. Click Manage Now
  3. Enter your email address. You need to have a Gmail account. If you don’t have one, or want to use your business email address, click here.
  4. Enter your business location or claim an existing listing.
  5. Verify your business with Google. This is usually done with a PIN number sent by postcard to the physical address or a phone call to the business number listed.
  6. Once you receive the PIN number you can verify ownership and manage your listing.

Benefits of Google Business Listings

In addition to the basic updates to business hours, address, or photos, the insights are truly where you see how users are engaging with your business. Find out exactly how potential customers are searching for and engaging with your business. This includes seeing where customers view your business on Google (Search or Maps), Customer Actions (visit your website, request directions, call you), Direction Requests, Phone Calls (when and how many times customers call your business), Photo Views, and more! You can even see the exact search terms users typed in to find your business listing.
